The Co‑operative Review
Because co‑operatives are member-owned, they are generally not subject to stock market listing. Unlike the situation for PLCs, teams of analysts are not employed to study their performance and the financial press often omits to report their results. As a consequence there has been a tendency to marginalise the role of the sector. Even co‑operatives themselves perhaps fail to appreciate fully their significance in the economy.
In 2007, Co‑operativesUK decided to undertake work to reverse this trend: work that has continued this year with the publication of the Co‑operative Review 2009, probably representing the most comprehensive report on the size and scope of co‑operative enterprise in the United Kingdom published in recent times. Launched at Co‑operatives 2009, this year's review has revealed that co‑operatives across the UK collectively represent 205,800 jobs and 11.3 million members generating a combined £28.9 billion in turnover.
By publishing an annual review of the co‑operative economy, Co‑operativesUK can help achieve a number of key objectives for the co‑operative movement in the UK, its regions and nations and beyond. Please click here to go back.
