The Institute of Co‑operative Directors
learning curve

Co‑operative enterprises are unique in that they enable ordinary people to be extraordinary. Co‑operatives are also complex organisations placing challenging demands on their directors and senior managers.

The Institute of Co‑operative Directors (ICD) exists to provide and develop the skills, knowledge and information needed to ensure that directors of co‑operative enterprises are suitably equipped to run their businesses to the highest standards of professional practice.

The ICD qualification framework provides a multi stage progressive approach offering four levels of qualification:

  • Foundation Certificate in Co‑operation
For those who wish to increase their knowledge of the co‑operative movement.
  • Certificate in Co‑operation
Equipping members and directors with the essential skills and knowledge for their role.
  • Co‑operative Director's Diploma
For co‑operative directors who want to extend their skills and knowledge of the broader context of the co‑operative movement.
  • Advanced Diploma for Co‑operative Directors
Building on the Director's Diploma the Advanced programme focuses on providing greater insight into the strategic and leadership issues for co‑operative directors.

The programme is delivered on our behalf by the Co‑operative College. The ICD jointly accredits the qualifications with OCR (Oxford, Cambridge & the Royal Society of Arts).

As a member of the ICD you will not only have the opportunity to study for the qualifications, you will gain access to other members of the Institute. A substantial resource of knowledge, skills and hard won experience, represented by over a thousand ICD members - past, present and future co‑operative directors.

Through the Co‑operativesUK web site you will be given access to specific ICD focused work areas providing opportunities to work with other members, share documents, and engage in ongoing discussion via the online forums.

In addition we will keep you in touch and informed through occasional email bulletins and mailings.

ICD membership is free to all individuals who are members of a co‑operative organisation which is itself a paid up member of Co‑operativesUK.

To apply for membership or for more information about the ICD, simply contact Dr. John Butler.
