Co‑operatives West Midlands

Co‑operatives West Midlands is a regional body promoting the co‑operative model of business, representing co‑operative enterprises, facilitating networking between co‑operatives and helping to support existing and new co‑operatives.

Co‑operatives West Midlands was launched at Voice 09 Birmingham on 11th February 2009.

The founding members of Co‑operatives West Midlands are:

• The Co‑operative Group
• Midlands Co‑operative Society
• Heart of England Co‑operative
• The Midcounties Co‑operative
• Tamworth Co‑operative Society
• Black Country Reinvestment Society
• Coventry & Warwickshire Co‑operative Development Agency
• Citysave Credit Union Ltd
• Confederation of Co‑operative Housing
• Birmingham Co‑operative Housing.

Co‑operatives^UK, the national membership body for co‑operative enterprises, calculates that there are 222 co‑operatives in the West Midlands, employing 12,533 people with a turnover of £1.7 billion.

These range from large, multi billion pound retail societies through to worker co‑operatives, credit unions, community development finance institutions and housing co‑operatives.

John Goodman, Head of Policy and the Regions at Co‑operatives^UK, is clear about the importance of regional co‑operative bodies. 
"Co‑operatives West Midlands will provide a focal point for co‑operatives in the region and enable them to work together, develop their businesses and promote the co‑operative way of doing business."
