Co‑operatives North East

Co‑operatives North East has been established to promote, build and represent co‑operative enterprises in North East England (County Durham, Northumberland, Tees Valley and Tyne & Wear).

Its services include:

  • Representation of the co‑operative sector in the region
  • Promotion and access to co‑operative models of practice for ethical businesses and community based organisations
  • Extending knowledge and understanding of the work of co‑operatives, their values and principles
  • Online statistical information and co‑operative directory
  • Access to and delivery of co‑operative related training
  • Email bulletins to inform the co‑operative sector of news and opportunities
  • Periodic meetings and events to engage and raise the profile of co‑operatives
  • An 'Opening Doors' project to provide mutual contact and approach between co‑operatives and organisations that will further their work, including media, business development bodies, education, industry support, networking etc.
  • An electronic mediation and advice service for co‑operatives
  • Research and pro-active development of new co‑operative projects
  • Links with other regional co‑operative councils, Co‑operatives UK and the Co‑operative Group
  • Promotion of Co‑operatives UK events including Co‑operative Congress and joint events. Access to their co‑operative registration service, legal advice and other services (actively promoting these and putting people in touch)
  • Visits to co‑operatives to learn how and why they succeed

While all co‑operatives can be arguably identified as social enterprises, their values and principles distinguish them from other forms of social enterprise or any other type of business or enterprise. Co‑operatives are therefore unique in their need for the specialist support provided by Co‑operatives North East. This will complement general mainstream support provided by other agencies.
