Supporting large and growing social enterprises: Social Enterprises with a Wide Market Focus

What are the support needs of larger social enterprises - or ones seeking to expand?

What are the skill needs of those which run them and of those who give them support?

These are the questions sought to be answered in a research project carried out by a Co‑operativesUK led partnership, for the Department for Education and Skills and the DTI Small Business Service, completed in July 2004.

The partners worked with seven social enterprises over 18 months, providing support, mapping the processes the businesses underwent as they tried to grow, and codifying the skills needs of the people driving those businesses forward. They looked at the range of support the businesses needed and where that support came from - locally, regionally and nationally - and whether mainstream business support bodies were in a position to respond to their support needs.

The full report can be downloaded by clicking here or on the icon. The download is a 1MB PDF file.

The project partners, and the Social Enterprises with a Wide Market Focus that assisted in the research:

  • Co-active, working with Playtots Childcare Ltd. and Mid Devon Community Recycling.
  • Co‑operative and Mutual Solutions, working with Oldham Community Leisure.
  • Economic Partnerships, working with Sunderland Homecare Associates and Northumberland Social Firm and Enterprise Trust.
  • The Guild, working with Recycle IT!
  • Mutualadvantage, working with Croydon Care Co‑operative.

The project was managed by Helen Seymour, Co‑operativesUK. If you would like to discuss any aspect of the work, please contact Helen on 0161 246 2921 or via email at helen.seymour@cooperatives-uk.coop
