Chinley community pre-school club - Case study
Chinley community pre-school club opened in September 2006. It is a before and after school club, which also provides a club during school holidays. It is based in rural Derbyshire and has places for 20 children. The pre-school is a worker co‑operative meaning that it is the childcare staff that provides and manages the service.
The co‑operative grew out of a church based playgroup, which folded due to internal differences in opinion. The County Council was anxious for it to continue with a proper constitution and proposed a social enterprise model. The staff at the original service and the Early Years Team from the County Council, planned a way forward, together. Parents do pay some of the cost for the service, but the Council also provides a sustainability grant.
